This was a great find: a step well in the heart of Delhi, namely Agrasen Ki Baoli–see recordings location map. Not only did this have some interesting sonic reflections between the parallel walls you can see here but at the bottom it had a very low crawl space into the now empty water cistern. This was about 6m in diameter and perhaps 20m in height. The sound reflections were very special: very strong and clear but still allowing clarity for the spoken voice (it wasn’t so wide after all). Moving closer to the middle or the walls of the cistern resulted in quite different reflective patterns striking the ears. I held an impromptu speech in here not so much as an act of pedantry but—as it was empty except for me–so that listeners here could hear the special acoustic thumbprint of the space:
