{"id":911,"date":"2016-05-02T17:26:02","date_gmt":"2016-05-02T17:26:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/michael-edwards.org\/wp\/?p=911"},"modified":"2019-02-16T10:25:29","modified_gmt":"2019-02-16T10:25:29","slug":"masterclasses-in-venice","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/michael-edwards.org\/wp\/?p=911","title":{"rendered":"Masterclasses in Venice"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The week of March 28th 2016 saw me giving saxophone and electronics masterclasses with Gianpaolo Antongirolami at the&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.conservatoriovenezia.net\/\" target=\"_blank\">Conservatorio di Musica &#8220;Benedetto Marcello&#8221; <\/a>in Venice. We were guests of Massimo Marchi and&nbsp;Paolo Zavagna, professors of electronic music (and excellent hosts) in Venice. I&#8217;d be hard pressed to think of a more beautiful place than this to work for a week. Of course Gianpaolo worked with the saxophonists (there are limits to my saxo-phoney masquerades) while I worked with the electronic musicians.<\/p>\n<p>We prepared a concert of Terry Riley (<em>Dorian Reeds<\/em>), James Tenney (<em>Saxony<\/em>) and my own&nbsp;<em><a href=\"http:\/\/sumtone.com\/work.php?workid=132\" target=\"_blank\">breathing Charlie<\/a>, <\/em>from 2004. This was written for myself, to get me back onstage playing an instrument. It deliberately involved improvisation, again, as a way of forcing the issue&#8212;I&#8217;d been meaning to get (again, back) to improvisation for a number of years by that point, since my days at <a href=\"http:\/\/ccrma.stanford.edu\" target=\"_blank\">CCRMA<\/a> back in &#8217;96 in fact, when I was writing <a href=\"http:\/\/michael-edwards.org\/software\/artimix.html\" target=\"_blank\">software<\/a> and working on&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/sumtone.com\/work.php?workid=56\" target=\"_blank\"><em>segmentation fault beta 1.1<\/em>&nbsp;<\/a>with <a href=\"http:\/\/trevisani.net\" target=\"_blank\">Marco Trevisani<\/a>. <em>breathing Charlie<\/em>&nbsp;certainly helped towards that end, but it wasn&#8217;t really until my residency the following year, at the 2005&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.kofomi.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Mittersill Composers&#8217; Forum<\/a> in Austria, that I started improvising freely in earnest, more regularly, and in mixed groupings.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_912\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-912\" style=\"width: 620px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/michael-edwards.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/venice-charlie.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-912 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/michael-edwards.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/venice-charlie-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"venice-charlie\" width=\"620\" height=\"465\" srcset=\"https:\/\/michael-edwards.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/venice-charlie-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/michael-edwards.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/venice-charlie-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/michael-edwards.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/venice-charlie-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/michael-edwards.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/venice-charlie.jpg 1286w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-912\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Rehearsals for breathing Charlie<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In Venice we presented&nbsp;&nbsp;<em><a href=\"http:\/\/sumtone.com\/work.php?workid=132\" target=\"_blank\">breathing Charlie<\/a>&nbsp;<\/em>with four saxophonists simultaneously. The image above shows them&nbsp;rehearsing in the sumptuous concert hall of the conservatoire. It worked surprisingly well in that format, I must say. Two students of Massimo and Paolo worked the electronics with surprising alacrity and finesse. We finished the concert with my&nbsp;<em><a href=\"http:\/\/sumtone.com\/work.php?workid=10\" target=\"_blank\">flung me, foot trod<\/a>&#8212;<\/em>Gianpaolo&#8217;s 37th performance of the piece, I believe, and the cause of my first meeting with Gianpaolo over T<em>agliatelle al Tartufo Nero<\/em>&nbsp;in L&#8217;Aquila, back in 2000.
